The Best Defense Against Scorpions

Be careful around scorpions—they can sting! The following is some essential information and some measures you can take when it comes to using pest control in Bartlesville, OK to keep these critters away.

What you need to know about scorpions

Scorpions are arachnids and are very closely related to spiders, ticks and mites. Worldwide, there are approximately 1,300 species of scorpions, all of which are identifiable by their elongated bodies and segmented tails tipped with a venomous stinger. Their stings feel similar to those of a bee or wasp, but as scary as they may look, most of the scorpions common to the Southern and Southwestern United States are actually not poisonous, aside from two species found in California, Arizona, Texas and New Mexico.

Another interesting fact about scorpions is that they do not have to be in the desert to survive. Many species of scorpions inhabit grasslands, savannahs, rainforests, pine forests, deciduous forests and even caves. Additionally, it’s important to know that most of the scorpions that wander inside dwellings are not poisonous—but it is best to never assume this!

Typical scorpion appearance

The basic appearance of scorpions is as follows. They have a long, slender body and a five-segmented tail that tends to be arched over the back. Scorpions vary in size depending on the species. They grow to about two inches in length when fully grown, and their coloring ranges between blue, yellow, black and reddish brown.

How to defend your home

There are recommended measures that homeowners and business owners can take for effective scorpion control. Here are a few:

  • Clean up: Start your home scorpion control regimen by removing outdoor debris piles and collections of garbage. This includes household garbage, firewood stacks, unkempt landscaping, piles of rocks and stones and random wood boards. Also, clean up any neglected spaces in and around your property, like garages, basements, sheds and patios.
  • Seal entry points: Just like other types of pests, scorpions can gain entry into your home through the tiniest openings. For this reason, walk around your house and seal off points of entry—think worn siding, weak windows and doors, piping and any spots with old weather stripping.
  • Try an insecticide: You can use a residual insecticide like a water-resistant powder or an encapsulated product. Apply it in a three- to 10-foot band around the border of the area with the scorpion issue, or use it around potential entry points, such as the garage, basement, baseboards, pantries and windows.
  • Use an insecticide dust: If the point of entry happens to be in the attic space, consider using insecticide dusts. Apply the dust using a duster. This dust can also be used in cracks, electrical wall fittings and wall voids, as well as around door and window frames.

If you are unfamiliar with how to deal with scorpions inside your home or around the exterior of your property, it’s best to call for professional pest control in Bartlesville, OK.
