How to Spot Termite Damage

Termites, although they’re small creatures, can do some serious damage to your home. They are able to sneak in through the tiniest openings in walls and flooring, and can appear anywhere at any time. They are the type of pest that attacks the structure of homes and buildings with blatant disregard for you and your property. And because they multiply at incredible rates, the sooner you are able to identify a termite problem and deal with it, the better.

Do not let termites bully you—stop them in their tracks! Here are some signs you need to call for termite control service in Bartlesville, OK right away:

  • Cracked walls: There could be several causes of cracks in your walls. One is termite damage on the inside of walls and ceilings. These pests bury themselves in the wooden frames of building walls, and unfortunately, this type of damage can cause a wall to begin to collapse. Termites can also damage your foundation, which may be indicated by sinking walls and cracked walls. If you have suspicious cracks in your walls, it certainly won’t hurt to schedule a termite inspection.
  • Raised floors: Subterranean termites come up underneath foundations, often creating mounds that tend to bubble your home’s flooring. Keep in mind that termites are not the only possible cause of floor bubbling—before assuming the worst, hire a house inspector to determine the cause of your uneven floors.
  • Wood dust: The easiest way to identify wood dust is taking a look at exposed wood in your home—like in the attic, garage and uninsulated open walls in the basement. Get it good and bright in the space and check around for wood dust and small pieces of wood. Noticing regular piles of wood dust in certain areas could be a sign of a termite problem. To test further, push a finger into any wood that is surrounded by dust to see if it’s soft. If your finger pushes through the wood with relative ease, you likely have a termite infestation in your home.
  • Visible tunnels: Drywood termites won’t hesitate to eat away at wood, especially antique wood furniture. After a while, they end up digging tunnels that become visible on the surface of the wood. A telltale sign of termite tunnels is maze-like patterned channels dug out of wood furniture.
  • Droppings: Drywood termites hang out inside wood. They tunnel through and eat wood, so their droppings are also going to be wood. Keep an eye out, especially around tunneled wood, for mounds of pellets that resemble sawdust or dry coffee grounds.
  • Insect wings and debris: Summertime is when winged termites shed their wings, but you might notice other types of insect debris littering your home throughout the year. While vacuuming and dusting, be aware of sprinkles of clear insect wings and other parts lying around.
