The Best Ways to Prevent a Roach Infestation

Cockroaches have been on this planet for over 300 million years, and they’ll still be here long after we’re gone, but just because they’ve been around longer doesn’t mean that they have the right to live inside your house. Continue reading to learn how you can prevent a cockroach infestation without the need for professional pest control in Bartlesville, OK:

  • Clean: Like with most pests, you can do a lot to prevent a cockroach infestation by keeping a clean house, particularly in your kitchen. Make a habit of wiping down your counters and stovetop each night, never leaving dirty dishes in your sink and always sealing open food containers. A 15-minute cleanup each evening could ultimately determine whether or not you have to deal with a cockroach infestation.
  • Keep your home cool: Cockroaches take flight and spread when temperatures start to rise. You can’t control the weather, but you can keep your air conditioning on and confine those cockroaches to the ground. Keeping the AC turned on or running fans all day and night might make your electric bill a little higher during the summer, but isn’t that better than having a cockroach infestation?
  • Seal cracks and holes: Roaches can slip into your house through the tiniest cracks. For that reason, it’s important to keep a caulking gun around to seal any cracks you might see. Cracks in the pantry, between your countertops and on baseboards are the most common entry points, so be sure to keep those closed up. Much like cleaning, this will take some effort, but it’s well worth it in the end.
  • Fix water leaks: Roaches are attracted to water, which is why you’ll often see them under the kitchen sink if there’s a small leak. Make sure you either fix leaks by yourself or call a plumber to do the job for you. Additionally, make sure you don’t overwater your houseplants, as any excess moisture anywhere in your house could draw roaches.
  • Make your own roach bait: Three parts boric acid and one part powdered sugar is the ultimate homemade roach bait. Cockroaches will swarm towards the powdered sugar, and be killed almost instantly by the boric acid. Though boric acid isn’t toxic to people or animals, it’s irritating, so be sure to keep it away from places where your kids or pets might come into contact with it.
  • Call the pros: Though all of the tips above can help prevent a cockroach infestation, bringing in the professionals to eliminate them is often your best bet. Not only will we kill all of the roaches that are currently in your home, but we’ll ensure they don’t come back by spraying preventative chemicals. Once we’re done, your home will be the last place cockroaches want to live!

A cockroach infestation isn’t just unpleasant—it’s unsanitary and can be dangerous to your health. It’s not a bad idea to call the team at Excellence Pest Control for first-rate pest control in Bartlesville, OK as soon as you notice a cockroach running around your house. Keep in mind that where there’s one, there could be dozens more!
